Hey duuuuuudes, sorry for the delay! Just got back from sittin my ass down on the beach. And it was great. Didn’t do much outside of sitting, eating and drinking. Every now and then a board game or some conversation with the family would occur. Anyway, on to some business!

How ’bout a couple things to cure the summertime boredoms!

[Saturday, August 2nd, 2008]
@ BCHQ. (723 N. Mangum St.) 3pm-2am. 10 bucks.

Ummm, yeah, that’s tonight and I suspect you already are aware of this show/benefit, but I just wanted to put it down in writing here. As it is most sweet. And I’d be lying if I didn’t elude to something along the lines of something about boasting or something. Er.

This is a benefit for a Trans-Continental Project spearheaded by some BCHQers. The ultimate goal of the project (which is already pretty much in swing) is to create trans-gender awareness, working across continents with the Hijra population in India. A pretty serious and respectful project! I’m excited to see what comes of it!

The line-up: JOHN DARNIELLE (of Mountain Goats, silly), MEGAFAUN, MOUNT MORIAH, DJ MEL YORK, EMBARRASSING FRUITS, BELOVED BINGE, SHAYNE O’NEILL (of Future Kings of Nowhere), DES ARK, ALLELAI, SHAWN LUBY, TIMOTHY THOMAS CLEARY & ARTY LOVELIGHT AND HIS PICKLED PIANO.

If this isn’t an obscene show off of local talent, then I’m just not so sure what would be! So we’ll call it just that. And it’s a benefit for an exciting cause.

@ BCHQ. (723 N. Mangum St.) 8pm. 5 bucks.

FUTURE KINGS OF NOWHERE (myspace)
JONESIN’ (myspace)
BEGIN-AGAINS (myspace)
FELLOW PROJECT (myspace)

Jonesin’ is the new project from members of Down in the Dumps and the runner of Dead Broke Rekerds (who are bringin’ back the mix tape in a serious way!!). It’s not too far off from the Dumps, so if you like/liked/loved them (like me), you’re gonna absolutely love them with their new name. Or perhaps you’ll be a little sad to not see some of the familiar faces. Anyway, I’m excited for the new project as the Dumps were one of my favorite bands to come through town. They’ve got an obvious, maddening love for Crimpshrine, Pinhead Gunpowder and Jawbreaker among others. The music is gruff, dark and brooding, yet they manage to toss their hooks in very efficiently. A little like Off With Their Heads – who you need to start listening to today if you do not know them yet.

Playing with Jonesin’ is new local pop punk band extraordinaire – the Begin-Agains. Who I’ve already written about at length here and here and probably a few other spots. I recently listened to their demo and I was blown away. Sure, it’s pop punk and that sound has already been written, but that’s the fun of it. It’s youthful, energetic and amazingly well played and put together. Catchy and biting at the same time. Soooo, if you’re diggin on some Ergs and sitting on the porch playing the hell out of your Screeching Weasel and other assorted East Bay pop punk records, swing on out. You won’t be disappointed.

Still working on the third band. Coming down to the wire. Shoot.

*EDIT: Future Kings of Nowhere now signed on to the show! Should be a good one! They were planning on practicing that night anyway, so luck just has it, they decided to practice in front of an audience instead! Woot!

Also, Fellow Project, friends of the Jonesin’ crew just joined on as well! Dead Broke Rekerds (run by Mikey Jonesin’) just released their brand new album. They had a show fall through somewhere around here on the very same night, so all turned out well. I know what you’re thinkin, four bands on a Tuesday night, pretty daunting, but it’ll work. Jonesin’ has something like a 15 minute set and the two bands will be sharing equipment, so them together will fit in a 40 minute block. You can do it.

As always, BCHQ is alcohol/drug-free, all ages and a 5 buck donation at the door. See ya out!!
